This is particularly relevant for descendants of Italian emigrants. Passenger lists, naturalization records, foreign birth and death certificates, and family documents sometimes identify a small village or locality rather than the official municipality where the civil record was registered.

For genealogical research, it may therefore be necessary to establish the relationship between the historical place name and the municipality responsible for the records.

Province of Catanzaro

The Province of Catanzaro includes many municipalities with a long history of emigration to the United States and other countries.

Municipalities include Catanzaro, Badolato, Borgia, Chiaravalle Centrale, Cropani, Davoli, Guardavalle, Lamezia Terme, Maida, Montepaone, Nocera Terinese, San Sostene, Satriano, Sellia, Sellia Marina, Sersale, Soverato, Squillace, Taverna, and Zagarise, as well as many smaller communities.

Cropani Marina and Cuturella are associated with the municipality of Cropani. A genealogical or immigration record may therefore identify an ancestor as coming from Cropani, Cropani Marina, or Cuturella, while the relevant civil registration records may be held by the Comune of Cropani.

Elce della Vecchia and Pietracupa are localities associated with the municipality of Guardavalle. These former municipalities were united to form the present-day municipality of Casali del Manco. Older birth, marriage, death, and family records may therefore identify one of the former municipalities rather than Casali del Manco.

Province of Crotone

The Province of Crotone includes municipalities such as Crotone, Belvedere di Spinello, Caccuri, Carfizzi, Casabona, Cirò, Cirò Marina, Cotronei, Crucoli, Cutro, Isola di Capo Rizzuto, Melissa, Mesoraca, Petilia Policastro, Roccabernarda, Rocca di Neto, Santa Severina, Scandale, Strongoli, and Verzino.

Older genealogical records may use the name of a small village, rural locality, or historical jurisdiction rather than the modern municipality. Identifying the correct Comune is therefore essential before requesting an official civil record.

Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria

The Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria includes many municipalities that appear frequently in Italian genealogical and immigration records.

These include Africo, Ardore, Bagnara Calabra, Bianco, Bova, Bova Marina, Bovalino, Brancaleone, Caulonia, Cittanova, Gerace, Gioia Tauro, Gioiosa Ionica, Locri, Mammola, Melito di Porto Salvo, Palmi, Polistena, Reggio di Calabria, Riace, Roccella Ionica, Rosarno, San Luca, Scilla, Siderno, Stilo, Taurianova, Villa San Giovanni, and many other communities.

Radicena and Jatrinoli were formerly separate municipalities. Historical civil and genealogical documents may therefore identify an ancestor as being born or residing in Radicena or Jatrinoli rather than in present-day Taurianova.

Province of Vibo Valentia

The Province of Vibo Valentia includes municipalities such as Acquaro, Arena, Briatico, Dasà, Fabrizia, Filadelfia, Limbadi, Mileto, Mongiana, Nicotera, Pizzo, Ricadi, San Calogero, Serra San Bruno, Soriano Calabro, Spilinga, Tropea, Vibo Valentia, Zambrone, and Zungri.

One historical place name is particularly important:

Monteleone di Calabria → Vibo Valentia

Older civil, military, immigration, and family records may identify the city as Monteleone or Monteleone di Calabria rather than Vibo Valentia. Recognizing the historical name can be essential when locating the correct Italian records.

Former Municipalities and Changed Place Names

Municipal boundaries and place names in Calabria have changed over time. Some towns that appear as independent municipalities in nineteenth- or early twentieth-century documents have subsequently been renamed, merged, or incorporated into another municipality.

Another important example is:

Nicastro • Sambiase • Sant'Eufemia Lamezia → Lamezia Terme

These formerly separate municipalities were united to form the present-day municipality of Lamezia Terme. An ancestor's historical record may therefore refer to Nicastro, Sambiase, or Sant'Eufemia Lamezia rather than Lamezia Terme.

For genealogical research, the place name should always be interpreted according to the administrative organization that existed at the time the record was created.

Why Villages and Historical Localities Matter in Genealogy

A family may have identified its place of origin by the name of a small village or frazione for generations, while births, marriages, and deaths were officially registered by the municipality to which that locality belonged.
