Which Italian Death Document Do You Need?
Italian municipalities can issue different documents relating to the same death. Although the information originates from the same civil registration record, a death certificate, death extract, and full copy are not the same document.
The appropriate document depends on how and where it will be used.
Italian Death Certificate – Certificato di Morte
An Italian Death Certificate – Certificato di Morte officially certifies a death registered with an Italian municipality.
It generally provides the principal information concerning the deceased and the death, including identifying information and the date and place of death.
It is a concise form of certification and does not reproduce all of the information contained in the original civil registration record.

Death Extract – Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Morte
The Death Extract – Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Morte reports information taken from the death record in accordance with Italian civil registration requirements.
Compared with a basic death certificate, it may contain more detailed information derived from the original record.
If a Consulate or other authority specifically requests an Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Morte, it is important to request that particular document rather than a basic death certificate.

Multilingual Death Extract – Estratto Plurilingue
A Multilingual Death Extract – Estratto Plurilingue is issued in a standardized multilingual format under applicable international conventions and is primarily intended for use abroad.
Under certain circumstances, it may be accepted in another participating country without requiring a separate translation.
You should always verify the exact document and formalities required by the authority where the record will be submitted.
Full Copy of the Death Record – Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Morte
A Full Copy of the Death Record – Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Morte reproduces the complete civil registration record held in the municipality's registers.
Unlike a certificate or extract, it provides access to the complete contents of the registered death record and can be particularly useful for legal matters, inheritance and probate proceedings, and genealogical research.
The issuance of full copies is subject to Italian rules governing civil status records, access to records, and personal data protection.

Death Abroad and Registered in Italy
An Italian citizen may have died outside Italy and the foreign death record may subsequently have been transcribed into the civil status registers of an Italian municipality.
In these cases, the Italian document is requested from the municipality where the foreign death record was registered.

Apostille for an Italian Death Certificate
When an Italian document will be used abroad, an Apostille may be required depending on the destination country, the type of document, and the requirements of the receiving authority.
An Apostille is not issued by the Italian municipality. It must be obtained from the appropriate Italian authority according to the type of document and the signature appearing on it.

How to Request an Italian Death Certificate or Death Record
To request an Italian death record, please provide as much information as possible about the deceased person.
The following information is particularly helpful:
- full name of the deceased;
- date, or at least approximate year, of death;
- municipality or locality where the death occurred or was registered;
- any available information about the person's parents or spouse;
- type of document required, if known;
- purpose for which the document will be used.

Depending on the period and location, records may be preserved by Italian municipalities, State Archives, ecclesiastical archives, or other historical repositories.
