If you need an Italian birth document for Italian citizenship, genealogy, or another official purpose, it is important to request the correct type of document from the Italian municipality where the birth was registered.
Depending on the procedure and the instructions provided by the Italian Consulate or other authority, you may be asked for an Extract of Birth Record, an Extract of Birth Record with parents' names, a Full Copy of the Birth Record, or an International (Multilingual) Birth Extract.
These documents are not necessarily equivalent. If the document is required for an Italian citizenship application, always check the exact wording used by the Italian Consulate or authority handling your case.
What Is an Extract of Birth Record?
An Extract of Birth Record (Estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita) is an official document issued by the Civil Registry Office (Ufficio dello Stato Civile) of the Italian municipality where the birth was registered.
Unlike a standard birth certificate, the extract contains information taken from the original birth record and may include additional details and annotations recorded in the civil registers, such as the parents’ names (paternity and maternity) and subsequent civil-status annotations.
An extract of the birth record may be required for Italian citizenship applications, genealogy research, and other administrative or legal purposes.
For Italian citizenship applications, it is particularly important to check the exact document required by the Italian Consulate or other competent authority. The instructions may refer to a “birth certificate (estratto dell’atto di nascita),” “extract of the birth certificate,” “Estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita,” or another specific form of the Italian birth record.

Birth Certificate: What Is the Difference from a Birth Record Extract?
An Italian Birth Certificate (Certificato di Nascita) certifies the birth of a person and generally contains essential information such as the person's first and last name, date of birth, and place of birth.
An Extract of Birth Record (Estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita) contains information taken from the original civil record and may include additional details, including, when provided and specifically requested, the parents’ names (paternity and maternity) and any annotations recorded on the birth act.
For this reason, an Italian Birth Certificate and an Extract of Birth Record are not the same document. This distinction can be particularly important for Italian citizenship applications, where the Consulate or other competent authority may require a specific type of birth document.

Full Copy of the Birth Record – Copia Integrale dell’Atto di Nascita
A Full Copy of the Birth Record (Copia Integrale dell’Atto di Nascita) is a complete reproduction of the original birth record preserved in the Civil Registry of the Italian municipality where the birth was registered.
Unlike a standard Birth Certificate or an Extract of Birth Record, the Full Copy reproduces the information contained in the original civil record and may also include subsequent annotations added to the record.
Depending on the period and the original record, it may contain the person's full name, date and time of birth, exact place of birth, parents’ names, their ages, occupations and residences, information about the person who declared the birth, witnesses, and marginal annotations.
A Full Copy of the Birth Record, an Extract of Birth Record, and a Birth Certificate are different documents. If the record is required for an Italian citizenship application or another official procedure, you should request the specific document indicated by the Italian Consulate or competent authority.

Birth Extract with Parents’ Names (Paternity and Maternity)
For some administrative procedures and Italian citizenship applications, an Extract of Birth Record showing the parents’ names may be required. In Italian, this is commonly requested as an “Estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita con indicazione della paternità e maternità.”
This document includes the names of the person's parents in addition to the information contained in the birth extract. It is important to specify this requirement when requesting the document, because a standard Birth Certificate (Certificato di Nascita) does not necessarily contain the parents’ names or all the information required for the procedure.

Multilingual or International Birth Record Extract
A Multilingual Birth Record Extract (Estratto plurilingue dell’atto di nascita) is an official civil-status document issued in a multilingual format for use outside Italy.
It contains the principal information relating to the birth using a standardized multilingual form. In countries and circumstances where the applicable international conventions are recognized, this format may eliminate the need for a separate translation.
Before requesting a multilingual birth extract, it is important to verify that the authority receiving the document accepts this format. For Italian citizenship applications or other official procedures, always follow the specific instructions provided by the Italian Consulate or competent authority.

When the Italian Birth Record Is Not Available
In some cases, an Italian municipality may be unable to issue an Extract or Full Copy of a Birth Record. This may occur when the birth took place before civil registration was established in that area or when the original registers are no longer available because of fire, flooding, earthquakes, wartime destruction, or other exceptional circumstances.
In these situations, it may be necessary to search parish or diocesan registers and obtain a Baptism Certificate from the parish, diocese, or other competent ecclesiastical authority.
When the document is required for an Italian citizenship application or another official procedure, it is important to verify in advance which substitute documents are accepted by the Italian Consulate or competent authority and whether any additional authentication or certification is required.
Italian Municipal Certification of Birth Record Unavailability
Apostille for Italian Birth Records
When an Italian Birth Certificate, Extract of Birth Record, or Full Copy of the Birth Record is intended for use abroad, an Apostille or another form of legalization may be required, depending on the destination country, the authority receiving the document, and the applicable international agreements.
Before requesting an Apostille, it is advisable to check the specific requirements of the authority where the document will be submitted.
