Birth certificate
Estratto per riassunto dal registro degli atti di Nascita
The long-form birth certificate (estratto di nascita) contains the main details appearing on the record of birth, and usually features the following annotations:
the time of birth, the parents’ names, the date of marriage, the spouse’s name...
The LONG-FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE is one of the documents required in order to submit a request for citizenship or dual citizenship. The original Long-form Birth Certificate is required, as issued by the Office of Vital Records of the relevant city authority, complete with lineage (stating the full names).
This document must be issued by the authority of the city were the ancestor was born.
Only in the event that the city authority cannot issue the Long-form Birth Certificate––because at the time of the ancestor’s birth the Office of Vital Records did not exist––may the original Certificate of Baptism issued by the parish authority be submitted instead, complete with lineage, authenticated by the diocesan administration.

In contrast to the Long-form Birth Certificate, the Short-form Birth Certificate (certificato di nascita) attests only that an individual was born and specifies that individual’s essential information such as first name, surname, date of birth and city of birth.
The SHORT-FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE does not, therefore, contain other annotations concerning marriage, divorce or death.

Full Copy of the Record of Birth
Copia Integrale Atto di Nascita
The Full Copy of the Record of Birth (Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Nascita), in contrast to the long-form or short-form versions of the birth certificate, is the photocopy of the original record of birth and contains all of the information (annotations) shown in the vital records register:
first name, surname, additional names, gender, place of birth, time/day/month/year of birth, and also sometimes states the specific address of the place of birth and may state whether or not the city authority also keeps updated the full records of marriage, divorce and death.
The FULL COPY OF THE RECORD OF BIRTH is very difficult to obtain if the person in question has/had been adopted.

Cause Fire Causa incendio
In the event that the city authority is unable to issue the Long-form Birth Certificate due to the fact that the person in question was born before the establishment of the Vital Records Office or because the documents have been destroyed as a result of flooding, fire, earthquake or other events, the certificate can be substituted by the Certificate of Baptism issued by the local parish authority or diocesan administration, complete with stamp of authentication, on condition that a declaration (like the one above) is issued by the city authority to explain why the certificate has not been issued.
An apostille can be added on request to the short-form certificates, long-form certificates and full copies of the record of birth.
