Historical Place Names in the Province of Agrigento
Historical records may use place names that differ from those found on modern maps. Recognizing these older names can be important when identifying the municipality where a civil, parish, or archival record should be searched.
Girgenti → Agrigento
Agrigento was officially known as Girgenti until 1927. Older Italian civil records, passenger lists, naturalization records, and other historical documents may therefore identify an ancestor's place of origin as Girgenti rather than Agrigento.
Marina di Girgenti / Molo di Girgenti → Porto Empedocle
Porto Empedocle developed from the historical port settlement known as Marina di Girgenti. After becoming an autonomous municipality in the nineteenth century, it was known as Molo di Girgenti before taking the name Porto Empedocle. These older place names may therefore appear in historical and genealogical records relating to families from the area.
Villages and Localities in the Province of Agrigento
Borgo Bonsignore and Seccagrande → Ribera
Borgo Bonsignore and Seccagrande are localities within the municipality of Ribera. A historical or family document may identify one of these smaller places rather than Ribera itself. When searching for civil or municipal records, it is therefore important to identify the Comune responsible for the locality.
Sant'Anna → Caltabellotta
Sant'Anna is a frazione of the municipality of Caltabellotta. Historical, family, or ecclesiastical records may refer to Sant'Anna rather than Caltabellotta itself. When researching civil records for a person associated with Sant'Anna, the administrative connection with the Comune of Caltabellotta should therefore be taken into account.
Porto Palo → Menfi
Porto Palo is a historic seaside village within the municipality of Menfi. Historical, family, or other records may refer to Porto Palo rather than Menfi itself. When researching an ancestor associated with Porto Palo, it is therefore important to consider its administrative connection with the Comune of Menfi.
Why the Exact Locality Matters
In genealogical research, the place name found in a historical document does not always correspond to an independent municipality. An ancestor may have been described as coming from a village, frazione, rural locality, or by an older name that does not appear as a modern Comune. Identifying the municipality responsible for that locality — and determining its administrative jurisdiction at the time of the event — can be essential for locating the correct civil, parish, or archival record.

Historical Place Names, Villages and Localities in the Province of Trapani
Monte San Giuliano → Erice
Erice was historically known as Monte San Giuliano, a name that frequently appears in older civil, parish, and genealogical records. The municipality officially adopted the name Erice in 1936.
Historical research in this area requires particular attention because the former territory of Monte San Giuliano was considerably larger than the present municipality of Erice. Areas that later became part of the municipalities of Buseto Palizzolo, Custonaci, San Vito Lo Capo, and Valderice were historically included within Monte San Giuliano. Older civil and genealogical records relating to families from these areas may therefore need to be researched in connection with the historical Comune of Monte San Giuliano.

Misiliscemi and the Former Territory of Trapani
Misiliscemi is a recently established municipality created from territory that previously belonged to the Comune of Trapani. Its territory includes localities such as Fontanasalsa, Guarrato, Locogrande, Marausa, Palma, Pietretagliate, Rilievo, and Salinagrande.
This administrative change is particularly important for genealogical research. An ancestor may be identified in family or modern records as coming from one of these localities, but older civil records may have been registered when the area was still part of the municipality of Trapani.
When researching families from the present-day territory of Misiliscemi, the historical administrative jurisdiction at the date of the birth, marriage, or death should therefore be determined before requesting the record.
Scopello → Castellammare del Golfo
Scopello is a frazione of the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo. Historical, family, or ecclesiastical records may identify a person as being from Scopello rather than Castellammare del Golfo. When researching civil records for an ancestor associated with Scopello, it is therefore important to consider its administrative connection with the Comune of Castellammare del Golfo.
Castelluzzo → San Vito Lo Capo / historically Erice
Castelluzzo is today a frazione of the municipality of San Vito Lo Capo. Historically, however, Castelluzzo formed part of the territory administered by Erice, formerly known as Monte San Giuliano, before the establishment of the independent municipality of San Vito Lo Capo in 1952.
This administrative history can be important for genealogical research. Older civil records relating to families from Castelluzzo may therefore need to be investigated in connection with the historical municipality of Monte San Giuliano or Erice, depending on the date of the event.
Macari → San Vito Lo Capo / historically Erice
Macari is today a frazione of the municipality of San Vito Lo Capo. Historically, however, Macari was part of the territory administered by Erice, formerly known as Monte San Giuliano, before the establishment of the independent municipality of San Vito Lo Capo in 1952.
This administrative history can be important for genealogical research. Older civil records relating to families from Macari may therefore need to be investigated in connection with the historical municipality of Monte San Giuliano or Erice, depending on the date of the event.
Nubia and Dattilo → Paceco
Nubia and Dattilo are frazioni of the municipality of Paceco. Historical, family, or other records may identify a person as being from one of these localities rather than Paceco itself. When researching civil records for ancestors associated with Nubia or Dattilo, it is therefore important to consider their administrative connection with the Comune of Paceco.
Not Sure Which Sicilian Municipality to Search?
Sometimes U.S. and other foreign records identify an Italian ancestor simply as being from “Agrigento,” “Trapani,” or “Sicily” without specifying the exact municipality.
Other documents may contain an old place name, a misspelled town name, or the name of a village, frazione, borgata, or rural locality rather than the municipality where the civil record was actually registered.
Administrative boundaries and municipality names have also changed over time. A locality that belongs to one municipality today may have been under a different Comune when your ancestor was born, married, or died.
Identifying the correct historical municipality is therefore an important part of genealogical research. I can help determine the most likely place of origin and identify the municipality, archive, or other repository where the relevant records should be searched.
