Which Italian Marriage Document Do You Need?
Italian municipalities can issue different documents relating to the same marriage. Although the information comes from the same civil registration record, a Marriage Certificate, Marriage Extract, and Full Copy of the Marriage Record are different documents.
The correct document depends on the purpose for which it will be used.
Italian Marriage Certificate – Certificato di Matrimonio
The Italian Marriage Certificate (Certificato di Matrimonio) officially certifies that a marriage was registered with an Italian municipality.
It generally includes:
- the names of the spouses;
- the date and place of marriage;
- the municipality where the marriage is registered.
This is the simplest form of marriage certification and does not contain all the information found in the original civil registration record.
Marriage Extract – Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Matrimonio
The Marriage Extract (Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Matrimonio) provides more information than a standard marriage certificate.
In addition to the principal details of the marriage, it may include official annotations recorded on the civil record, when applicable and legally certifiable.
This type of document is frequently requested for administrative procedures and, depending on the specific requirements, for Italian citizenship applications.

Multilingual Marriage Extract – Estratto Plurilingue
The Multilingual Marriage Extract (Estratto di Matrimonio Plurilingue) is issued in a standardized multilingual format under the applicable international conventions and is primarily intended for use outside Italy.
In many cases, it can be presented in another participating country without requiring a separate translation.
Requirements vary by country and authority, so it is always advisable to verify exactly which document and formalities are required before ordering.

Full Copy of the Marriage Record – Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Matrimonio
The Full Copy of the Marriage Record (Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Matrimonio) reproduces the complete civil marriage record held in the Italian Civil Registry.
Unlike a standard certificate or extract, it provides the full contents of the original record and may contain additional information that can be particularly valuable for legal documentation and genealogical research.
Full copies are issued in accordance with Italian regulations governing civil records, access to records, and privacy.

Marriage Celebrated Abroad and Registered in Italy
A marriage celebrated outside Italy may be registered (transcribed) in the Civil Registry of an Italian municipality.
Once the marriage has been registered in Italy, the municipality can issue the corresponding Italian civil records, including a Marriage Extract (Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Matrimonio) or, when available, a Full Copy of the registered marriage record (Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Matrimonio).
I can conduct research with the appropriate Italian municipality to verify whether the marriage was registered in Italy and request the available documentation.
This can be particularly useful when the marriage took place abroad many years ago and the details of its subsequent registration in Italy are unknown.
Marriage Records for Italian Citizenship
Italian marriage records are frequently required for Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) applications.
The exact document required may vary depending on the procedure and the authority handling the application. It is therefore important to request the specific document indicated by the Italian Consulate, municipality, court, or other competent authority.
Depending on the case, you may be asked to provide:
- an Estratto per Riassunto dell'Atto di Matrimonio (Marriage Extract);
- an Estratto di Matrimonio Plurilingue (Multilingual Marriage Extract);
- a Copia Integrale dell'Atto di Matrimonio (Full Copy of the Marriage Record);
- another certificate or civil record issued by the Italian municipality.

Apostille for an Italian Marriage Certificate
If an Italian marriage certificate or marriage record will be used outside Italy, an Apostille or another form of legalization may be required, depending on the destination country and the purpose for which the document will be used.
The Apostille is not issued by the municipality together with the marriage certificate. When required, it must be obtained from the appropriate Italian authority after the document has been issued.

How to Request an Italian Marriage Certificate or Marriage Record
To request an Italian marriage document, it is important to identify the Italian municipality where the marriage was celebrated or registered.
To determine whether I can obtain the document, please provide as much information as possible, preferably:
- the full names of both spouses;
- the date of marriage, even if approximate;
- the place or Italian municipality where the marriage was celebrated;
- any available information concerning the registration of a marriage celebrated abroad;
- the type of document required, if specified by an Italian Consulate or another authority;
- the purpose for which the document will be used.
