Civil registration records are kept at the local Anagrafe ( registrar’s office ) in each town or city.
State of the Family Certificate - Certificato Stato di famiglia
A civil record unique to Italy is the stato di famiglia, or state of the family certificate.
Historical states of the family [stato di famiglia storico] are kept at the provincial archive [ufficio dello stato civile]. The comune keeps a record of each family and updates births, marriages, deaths, and emigration.
Death Certificate - Certificato di morte
Death records are especially helpful because provide important information about a person’s birth, spouse, and parents.
Marriage Records Certificate Certificato di matrimonio
The civil marriage records include more information than the church records.
In most cases you may find marriages recorded in both civil and church records.

Under Italian law, records of marriages,births, and deaths are maintained by the Registrar of Vital Statistics (Ufficio dello Stato Civile) in the city (comune or municipio) where the event occurred. All requests must be written in Italian. There is no central office established which keeps such records.
